Currently, an estimated 300 million people worldwide who suffer from obesity. This amount is equivalent to the starving population. In the United States, according to 2003 data, children who are obese has reached 15 percent of the population. Meanwhile, in the country, according to Riskesdas 2010 there were 14 per cent of children aged 0-5 years who are overweight.
"Both obesity and obesity is not an issue of aesthetics or appearance. However, this is a disease. Although no national data, but obesity has become a pandemic in Indonesia," said Dr. Aman Bhakti Pulingan, SpA, a child endocrinologist from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia.

Research has shown, 1 in 6 overweight adolescents suffer from pre-diabetes, a condition when impaired glucose tolerance. "If it interfered with the correct diet for 20 months, then the child can be protected from diabetes. Remember! Once diabetes, diabetic children will be lifelong," he said.
He also recommends that parents of children who are overweight or suffer from diabetes should perform blood sugar checks. "Children aged 10 years are advised to check-up. But if you have risk factors, you should not postpone the examination until a child is a teenager," he said.
