Dearborn Court jury fined the pastor of Gainesville's Dove World Outreach Center is due to plan a protest outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn could lead to violence.
The jury believes that the protest had nothing to do with the basic rights of citizens as described in the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, even bet security and peace in society. Initially, Jones and his assistant refused to pay the fine. He said the trial is a violation of constitutional rights.
After refusing to pay fines, both men were taken to a local prison. However, local media reported that Terry Jones and his assistant changed his mind after spending about an hour behind the trial and willing to pay a fine amounting to one dollar.
Jones and his followers planned to burn copies of the Koran on the ninth anniversary of September 11 last year. The plan is to invite outrage and condemnation around the world. Finally he decided to cancel the show which he called the "International Day Burning the Koran."
However, he decided to hold a 'hearing' on 20 March in which the Koran was found guilty and executed by burning.
This event caused violent protests in Afghanistan and widespread international condemnation, including from the United States President Barack Obama, who said, "desecration of any holy text, including the Koran, is an act of extreme intolerance and fanaticism."
Dearborn is home to the largest Islamic community in the United States. In the 2000 census, Arab Americans comprised 30 percent of the population of 98 000 Dearborn.
